Welcome to the SH1 Invercargill Business Directory in Southland (including Bluff & Gore)

Greetings to all the Businesses in Southland that are trading along State Highway 1. This is the main highway that runs through the length of New Zealand. It starts at the very bottom of New Zealand in a small village called Bluff. It passes along Bluff Road and meets up with Clyde Street in Invercargill. Turn right at the town clock and SH1 will take you along Tay Street.

There are several good accommodation places to stay on Tay Street. The last place on the left of Tay Street before you leave the City is Ascot Park Hotel. Travelling north along SH1 you will pass three small villages, Woodlands, Edendale and Mataura before you arrive at the rural town of Gore. From Gore SH1 takes you north into Otago country.

Some traditions never die they just become a reminder of the way we were. This copper Kettle and solid china cup has been part of H & J Smiths Invercargill store since 1936.

Invercargill can boast at having some of the most wonderful looking old hotels which have been well maintained to their original condition. The Railway Hotel above and the Grand Hotel certainly captured my attention and are a credit to Invercargill and the Southland people

At this spot in March 1856 John Kelly a seaman who had settled at Ruapuke 32 years earlier landed the stores for the first farmers who settled near Invercargill. This historic building is now the home of New Life Christian church. Its cornerstone links Clyde Street with Tay Street on the way north along SH1 to another Southland town called Gore
